Still from S.S. Lusitania Leaves New York City on Last Voyage
Still from the film "S.S. Lusitania Leaves New York City on Last Voyage," recorded in New York on May 1, 1915, from the US National Archives film 111-H-1221. Shows passengers of the Lusitania arriving at the Cunard Line pier before setting sail.
The Lusitania departed from Pier 54 in what is today New York City's Meatpacking District. The pier is located on the water at the intersection of W 13th St. and 10th Avenue. The Cunard Line, the famous British shipping company that owned and operated the Lusitania, previously operated Pier 54. Today, all that remains on the pier is the steel shell of the former, Cunard building, where you can still make out the faint "Cunard Line" and "White Star Line" words painted on the shell; "White Star" is a reference to the eventual merging of the Cunard and White Star Lines to form the Cunard-White Star Line in 1934.
