Letter from Robert Burns to the Earl of Buchan, dated Lawnmarket (Edinburgh) 7th February 1787 thanking him for his recognition and his advice, and including the lines - 'Praise from thy lips? 'tis mine with joy to boast/ They best can give it who deserve it most'.
The letter was donated by Burns' son, Colonel William Nicol Burns, in 1865.
In reality, Burns wrote the letter 'in answer to a bombast epistle' from Buchan, dated 1st February 1787 (LSH 0696/92; TWM 045.tiff).
