Letter from the Earl of Buchan to Robert Burns, dated Edinburgh 1st February 1787.
David Stewart Erskine (1742-1829), 11th Earl of Buchan, saw himself as a patron of literature and the arts, although his patronage tended towards good advice rather than any financial assistance. He was a founder of the Society of Antiquaries in 1780.
A kind and complimentary letter stating 'these little Doric pieces of yours in our provincial dialect are very beautiful ( ) I am Mr Burns, with great justice to your merits your well-wisher. Buchan'. The reverse bears a poem by Burns, beginning 'Whare gat ye that happed meal bannock?'
