These figures are sometimes thought to have been made following a Masked Ball held at the Ranelagh Gardens on 24th May 1759 to celebrate the birthday of George Frederick, Prince of Wales. There are fourteen known examples in the set, 11 of which are in the public collection at Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia.
