The needle is vertcal above a metal cloth plate. The cloth plate has several engraved inscriptions. There is also an engraved shield with a number that appears to rotate to indicate how many stitches per inch the machine will do. The arm of the machine is curved. , , The box opens to the side to allow the machine to slide in. The are two batons inside the case to hold the base in place and prevent the machine rising up if jolted.
