The year is 1869, the setting is Worcester’s General Infirmary, and a fundraising event is being held in aid of a new orphanage which the hostess, Miss Ravisham, hopes to build in nearby Lower Broadheath.

But there’s a dramatic hitch: in the presence of guest speaker Charles Dickens, a murderer can’t contain his grim intent and kills one of the visitors. Reimagined for a haunting Museums at Night event at a building which originally opened as a much-needed hospital more than 170 years ago, a murder mystery could scarcely take place in a more unnervingly realistic setting.

“Our night is unique in so many ways,” says Mark Macleod, the charismatic chap who holds the equally unique title of Head of The Infirmary, outlining a trail of suspicion which leads three miles to the beautiful Elgar Birthplace Museum.

“It’s our first time in the murder field. We are starting here with the murder, then heading up the road to the Elgar for further investigations, a barbecue and the convictions. Both venues are excited.”

The museum is one of the country’s treasures: Elgar was born in 1857 in the cottage, surrounded by grounds where guests will interrogate suspects. Food, drinks and dessert will be served to sleuths before they guess who carried out an act out of keeping with a place which, for this festival special, is even more worth seeing than usual.

  • What the Dickens...? takes place on May 16 2015. Book tickets.
