The Vatican's art treasures get the 3D cinema treatment in UK nationwide screening

Immersive night-time footage from the halls that house some of the most rare and precious works of art in the world. It's Vatican Museums 3D

Cinema screenings of blockbuster museum exhibitions may have become de rigueur but the latest incarnation of this new phenomenon is adding a twist that might just start another trend.

On November 18 2014 - for one day only - a simultaneous nationwide screening of The Vatican Museums 3D, the first ever 3D film of the collection of the Vatican Museums, will take place in more than 200 selected cinemas across the UK and Ireland.

The film promises “unprecedented access" to the spectacular treasures of the Vatican, including the world famous Michelangelo ceiling for the Sistine Chapel as well as priceless works by Leonardo, Caravaggio, Raphael, Giotto, Chagall, Van Gogh and countless others.

Created by a team of more than 40 experts in the field of cinematography using Ultra High Definition cameras, the footage was filmed at night to reveal the masterpieces as they have never been seen before.

And with the immersive realism of 3D thrown in for added measure, audiences are promised an experience in which they can  "touch" Michelangelo’s sculptures and "enter" paintings such as The Creation of Adam.

The film, which is being billed as an unrivalled journey around the greatest collection in the world, is lead by the Director of the Vatican Museums, Professor Antonio Paolucci.
