International Museum Day 2024

18 May is celebrated by museums around the world. Slovenian Museums, together with ICOM Slovenia, will once again celebrate the International Museum Day, which this year focuses on the theme Museums for Education and Research.

The Slovenian Theatre Institute - Theatre Museum is also joining the International Museum Day celebrations with an open day.

In pusuit of a theatre, From the Jesuits to Cankar, permanent exhibition, individual tours
The permanent exhibition vividly presents the origins and main currents of theatre in Slovenia, its involvement in European cultural developments and its role in shaping Slovenian national consciousness. Families, children and young people can also visit the permanent exhibition with research worksheets.

The Documents - 60 years, from theatre magazine to book collection, temporary exhibition, individual visits
In 1964, the first issue of Documents of the Slovenian Theatre Museum was published, which - after the MGL Library - is the second oldest theatre book collection in Slovenia. The Documents were born out of a desire to present and interpret historical material on theatre. They have been with us for many decades, fulfilling their original mission in various ways. On the occasion of the anniversary, we have organised a temporary exhibition in which we look back on the journey we have made, remembering the editors and authors and their fundamental works for theatre history.

The National Museums of Slovenia, under the auspices of ICOM Slovenia, have traditionally celebrated International Museum Day with a joint exhibition dedicated to highlighting the annual theme. This year's joint billboard exhibition presents each museum with its current programmes and themes that put education and research at the centre of the exhibition.
